Brow Gel vs Brow Pomade vs Brow Crayon: Which One Is Right for You?

THE AJ EDIT•
Brow Gel vs Brow Pomade vs Brow Crayon: Which One Is Right for You?

If you’ve ever looked at a lineup of brow products and wondered why you need quite so many ways to fill in two eyebrows, you’re not alone.

Brow gel, pomade and crayon can all give you fuller, more defined brows - but they don’t do the same job. The right one really comes down to your natural brows, how much definition you want and how much time you’re prepared to spend on them.

Here’s how to choose.

Brow Gel: For Quick, Everyday Definition

If you want your brows to look a little more polished without looking overly “done”, brow gel is your friend.

A tinted brow gel adds subtle colour and definition while helping to shape the hairs you already have. It’s particularly good for naturally fuller brows that don't need much filling, or mornings when you want to get your brows done quickly.

Brush it through following the natural direction of your brow hairs and you’re done.

Or, if you prefer no colour, try a clear brow gel.

Best for:
Natural brows, quick mornings and anyone who prefers a softer finish.

Choose brow gel if:
You already have a good amount of brow hair and mainly want definition and easy styling.

Brow Crayon: For Filling Gaps and Creating Shape

A brow crayon gives you more control over exactly where you add colour.

Rather than covering the whole brow, you can use it to fill sparse patches, add definition through the arch or extend the tail. Applied with a light hand, it can still look incredibly natural.

This is a great middle ground if brow gel isn't quite enough, but you don't want the stronger definition of a pomade.

For sparse areas, use small strokes rather than drawing one continuous line, then brush everything through with a spoolie to soften the finish.

Best for:
Sparse patches, uneven brows and everyday definition.

Choose a brow crayon if:
You want to add shape and fullness exactly where you need it while keeping the finished brow soft and natural.

Brow Pomade: For More Definition

If you like a more sculpted, defined brow, brow pomade gives you the most control over shape and intensity.

Pomade can be used to build colour, sharpen the brow shape and create definition in areas where there is less natural hair. The key is starting with a small amount of product and building gradually - a little goes a long way.

Use an angled brow brush to apply, concentrating most of the definition through the arch and tail while keeping the front of the brow softer.

Best for:
More defined brows, creating shape and filling noticeably sparse areas.

Choose pomade if:
You prefer a stronger, more polished brow or want more control over the shape you're creating.

So, Which Brow Product Do You Actually Need?

Think about the finish you want.

Want quick and natural? Go for brow gel.

Want to fill gaps while keeping things soft? Choose a brow crayon.

Want more shape and definition? Reach for pomade.

And you don't necessarily have to choose just one.

A brow crayon or pomade can be used to create your shape and fill sparse areas, while brow gel can be brushed through afterwards for additional colour and styling.
